When designing a TFT for outdoor use LCD displayWhen designing outdoor displays, the most important consideration is ensuring the screen remains clear and readable even in strong sunlight, while also taking into account factors such as power consumption and reliability. While transflective TFT displays offer excellent performance and energy efficiency, they are relatively expensive for mass production and have certain limitations in terms of delivery and MOQ quantities. Addressing the demand for outdoor displays, comparing their advantages and disadvantages, may lead to finding a cost-effective alternative.
Outdoor displays prioritize brightness and visual quality, ensuring clear visibility in sunlight. They seek alternatives to more expensive transflective screens. Based on the experiences of numerous customer projects, Hongcai Technology has compared several display solutions and provided practical technical recommendations.
Why only transflective displays have good outdoor display effects
Transflective displays are a type of LCD technology that combines the advantages of transmissive and reflective displays. They maintain excellent visibility in both sunlight and low-light environments indoors. This is their sole advantage, but their drawbacks are also significant. They cost more than standard TFT transmissive or reflective screens, have very low light transmittance, and display colors lack the vividness and brightness of TFT LCDs. The price is two to three times higher than that of standard transmissive TFT displays. If you can accept these, there are more serious drawbacks: a very limited range of sizes, and color and contrast levels far inferior to full-viewing IPS displays. Reflectivity is even worse after the touchscreen is laminated.
Comparison of existing display solutions
| LCD Type | Under strong light | cost | Color contrast | Remarks |
| Semi-reflective TFT | ★★★★★ (Excellent) | ★★★★ ☆ | ★★☆☆☆ | Expensive, outdoor, indoor |
| IPS full-viewing angle display | ★★★★☆ (Good) | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★★ ☆ | Outdoor, indoor |
| Ordinary transmissive TFT | ★★☆☆☆ (Poor) | ★☆☆☆☆ | ★★★★ ☆ | Indoor use |
| Electronic Paper (E-Ink) | ★★★ ☆☆ | ★★★★ ☆ | ★☆☆☆☆ | Indoor use |
High brightness TFT display recommended
TFT displays offer high brightness (1000-1200 nits) and are clearly readable in sunlight. IPS displays offer full viewing angles and enhanced color quality, costing approximately one-half to one-third the cost of transflective screens. They are compatible with both capacitive and resistive touchscreens, and laminated for an enhanced viewing experience. Hongcai currently mass-produces 1000-nit displays in 2.8-inch, 3.2-inch, 3.5-inch, and 12.3-inch sizes, achieving an ideal balance between cost and outdoor display quality.
